Imperial to Metric Cooking Converter

Convert cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, ounces and sticks to grams and milliliters for the ingredients you actually bake with. A cup of flour and a cup of sugar don't weigh the same, so each ingredient uses its own density.

⚖️
Why convert to grams?

Weight is far more consistent than volume. Grams give you the same result every time, which matters most in baking.

🥄
Why cups aren't accurate

How you scoop changes how much fits in a cup. One cup of flour can weigh anywhere from 120 to 150 g depending on packing.

🌍
US cups vs metric cups

A US cup is 236.6 ml. A metric cup is 250 ml. This converter uses the US cup, which is what American recipes assume.

🧈
What is a stick of butter?

One US stick of butter is ½ cup, 8 tablespoons or 113 g. Two sticks make one cup, or 227 g.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in a cup?
It depends on the ingredient. A US cup of all-purpose flour is about 120 g, granulated sugar is about 200 g, and water is about 237 g. Use the converter above for your specific ingredient.
Why does a cup of flour weigh less than a cup of sugar?
Cups measure volume, not weight. Flour is light and airy, while sugar crystals pack tightly, so the same volume of sugar weighs more.
Are US, UK and Australian cups the same?
No. A US cup is 236.6 ml, a metric cup (Australia, New Zealand, Canada) is 250 ml, and old UK recipes may use a 284 ml cup. This converter uses the US cup.
How many grams is a stick of butter?
One US stick of butter is 113 g (4 oz), which equals ½ cup or 8 tablespoons.
How should I measure a cup of flour?
Fluff the flour with a spoon, spoon it into the cup and level it off with a knife. Scooping straight from the bag packs it and can add 20 percent more flour.
Why does salt vary so much between brands?
Grain size changes density. Table salt is much denser than flaky kosher salt, so a teaspoon of each can differ by a factor of two. Weigh salt whenever the recipe gives a weight.
